Acne is a common skin problem among adolescents and adults. This is a skin condition in which whiteheads, blackheads and inflamed red growths forms mostly on the cheeks of the face. It occurs when pores of the skin becomes clogged with dirt. Although the body’s total health is not threatened by this, it is still significant for us to treat it. Also, it can cause cutaneaous and emotional scars that could last a lifetime which is also a cause for the decrease of employability among adults.
Acne has several types. The most common is the acne vulgaris. This is a mild or moderate skin condition in which whiteheads, blackheads, and pimples occur on the surface of the skin. Whiteheads is a result when sebum (or the skin’s natural oil), bacteria and dead skin cells are trapped inside the pores, causing it to have a white appearance on the surface. Blackheads are results of blocked sebum, bacteria and dead skin cells in the pores that are slow to drain out into the surface. Dirt is not the cause why it is black but the skin pigment, melanin, is reacting with the oxygen present in the air. Blackheads often take a long time to clear than those of whiteheads. What makes the skin scar after these skin break outs are squeezing them especially if it is already on the stage of papules. Papules are the reddish, inflamed tender bumps on the skin with no head which will turn into pustules, the ones with the yellow center on a red, inflamed skin circle.
Another type is the severe acne vulgaris where nodules and cysts occur on the surface of the skin. Nodules are acne spots that are much larger on the skin surface, maybe quite painful and scarring may occur. If these nodules exacerbates, it can leave an impaction behind that would cause another cycle of acne on the skin. Cysts are similar to a nodule but are pus-filled and much larger than a nodule of which it can measure up to a 5mm diameter. This can get very painful and squeezing this kind of acne can leave severe scars, deeper infection and painful inflammation that could last for many months or years.
A different type is the acne rosacea which affects millions of people especially on the age of 30. This acne looks more like a red rash across the face and is accompanied by pimples and skin blemishes. Moreover, blackheads are not part of this type of acne and are more prevalent in women but more severe on men. If this is left untreated, rhinophyma often occurs. Rhinophyma is a skin condition that causes the swelling of the nose and growth of more skin tissues on the facial skin. One more type is the acne conglobata which is the most severe type of acne vulgaris and is more common among the males. One can see large lesions, often connected with widespread blackheads. It can cause serious and irreversible damage of the skin and disfiguring scars. It is located in the face, chest, back, buttocks, arms and thighs. The age of onset of acne conglobata is usually between 18-30 years, and the condition may remain active for many years. Like all forms of acne, the cause of acne conglobata is unknown.
Other rare acne types are the Acne Fulminans, Acne Fulminans and Pyoderma Faciale (Rosacea Fulminans). The first one is an abrupt occurrence of the acne conglobata and still affects young men. But this is the only acne that can cause fever and aching of the joints. The second one is caused by bacterial infection on the skin and is not determined if it afflicts men or women due to its rarity. The last one is distinguished by large nodules and cysts and occurs to 20 – 40 years old women who haven’t had any acne before.
Acne is mostly common to adolescents. The onset of acne happens to 90% of adolescents worldwide or 3 out of 4 teenagers suffers acne. This is largely caused by puberty and the raging hormonal imbalances that every adolescent experiences. Moreover, acne becomes severe during this stage due to adolescents doesn’t have any more time to wash their faces after the day has gone which is very important for skin care.
Adolescence is a time in a person’s life where emotional, physical and social developments occur. Acne can have cruel effects on an adolescent’s life, both physically and emotionally. Severe acne can cause scars on the face and other body parts that may leave bad impressions on other people.
One significant factor that causes acne problems among teenagers is poor hygiene. Teenagers at this time and age have so much in their schedules that they often forget to wash up their faces. It is recommended to every teenager to wash up with a nondrying soap such as Ivory, Cetaphil or Dove before going to sleep so as to wash away all the dirt and impurities that stuck on the face from all the activities during the day. Also, avoid touching the face area with the hands as hands are the dirtiest part of one’s body. Moreover, after activities that can cause sweating, one should shower up using the same nondrying soap mentioned above.
A common cause that could make acne worsen is having long hair among teenage girls and boys. Hair that almost covers half of the face irritates existing acne because of its natural sebum. A person’s hair, regardless of age is covered with the skin’s natural oil called sebum which makes it shiny and supple. This sebum attracts dirt and impurities from pollution sticking it to the hair. If these strands of hair get in contact with acne on the face, bacteria can worsen the skin’s condition. It is advised that hair should be kept away from the face to avoid worsening of the skin.
Cosmetics is another cause of acne. Other cosmetic products have ingredients that could irritate the skin especially a teenager’s where skin is still developing and is changing due to hormones secreted through the body. This is popular among teenage girls today who use make- up to cover their skin break outs. This could worsen acnes because it could clog the pores more and slows down acne’s healing process. One cannot forbid teenage girls not to wear make-up but they can always use cosmetics that are hypo-allergenic and has natural ingredients. In addition, one should not forget to wash away all cosmetics from the face before going to bed.
Most of the people, not just teenagers eat mostly of processed food. Processed food has ingredients that could disturb the glucose rates in the blood. If this happens, it could result to more fats stored in the cells that could worsen the secretion of sebum onto the skin. Thus, making the face oilier which could cause dirt to stick to it and worsen the case of acne. Furthermore, processed food could also cause skin allergies that may later become acne. It is better to consume organic fruits and vegetables that has fiber, vitamins and minerals that can add moisture and clears up the skin.
Topical and oral treatments are also advised to people who already have severe acne and can be bought over the counter. Benzoyl peroxide is the most common. It has three actions – it kills bacteria, reduces inflammation, and helps to unplug blocked pores. Therefore it often works well to clear inflamed spots and helps to clear blackheads and whiteheads. Another are retinoids which are good for unplugging clogged pores. Also it could lessen the inflammation and should be used early on comedones (black and whiteheads) to prevent severe acne. Topical antibiotics are also used to treat acne to lessen and kill bacteria that may be surrounding the inflamed area. However, this does not help unclog pores so black and whiteheads may still exist.
One should keep in mind that prevention is always better than cure. Practicing a good hygiene is key to have a clearer, smooth skin. Moreover, eating fruits and vegetables could keep your skin healthy at a cellular level. Don’t forget to drink at least 2.4 liters of water every day to keep the skin hydrated the whole day especially if one has an active lifestyle.
