This year’s Oscar Best Actress winner, Natalie Portman and her fiancé’, Benjamin Millepied wrote toPresident Barack Obama to show their support for the movement to make gay marriage legal in the US. Portman who portrayed a ballerina who had same-sex relations in her Oscar-winning movie, Black Swan, joins over a hundred thousand people pushing for equality in marriage for gays. Portman and her fiancé’ are just two of the growing number of celebrities joining this campaign. Another famous couple joining the pressure for the legalization of gay marriage is Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt who stated that they will not wed unless everybody in the US enjoys the right to marriage. Massachusetts was the first state to legalize same-sex marriage; it’s also where staunch advocates of the movement, Jane Lynch and Dr. Lara Embry got married May of 2010. Majority of the states still define marriage as a union between man and a woman and do not hold Hollywood celebrities as arbiters of what to make legal or not, but celebs are making themselves heard.
